[DeTomaso] speaking of wheels falling off---

I lost the drivers side rear wheel twice on my 68 Fastback before I found
the wrong studs were on it. The studs wouldn't fully seat flush with the
back of the hub and after a few heat cycles the lugs would loosen and fall
off.

My brother lost a wheel on his 69 Dodge Dart - twice. Fortunately, he was
only going 15-20 mph at the time.

It was the back right. When the wheel popped off, the car dropped a few
inches, and the car slid on the traction bar. We felt the bump, and
otherwise couldn't tell anything had happened.

The Dart used 7/16" studs whereas most American cars use 1/2" studs. Somehow
the holes in the hub were elongated, so the studs didn't fit properly. All
5 studs broke in half.

We bummed a ride to the parts store, bought all the 7/16" studs they had,
and put the wheel back together. It popped off again about a block away.

We got the wheel back on, this time with only 3 studs (all we had). We
tightened the heck out of them, and made it home.

He bought a new axle and was able to keep the wheel on.

My point is we didn't use an impact, we didn't use the wrong lugnuts, we
didn't do anything weird at all - except - for some reason the holes in the
axle were elongated, and that's what caused the studs to pop.
