Boyd,

You weren't by chance running wheel spacers, were you?   Those have been 
known to cause studs to break as well.   Geoff Peters narrowly averted 
disaster when he got stuck in a traffic jam on the freeway on the way home from a 
track day.   A frantic motorist in the adjacent lane got him to pull over; 
there he discovered two of his rear studs had snapped off and the others 
weren't far behind.   Were it not for the sharp eyes of the gawker in the 
adjacent lane, things could really have turned ugly.   And had the failure happened 
while he was tearing around at full throttle on a track---yikes!

Geoff's failure was caused by the use of flat wheel spacers, which really 
are doom.   They cause unbelievably high cyclic shear loading on the studs, 
and they just can't take it.
