[DeTomaso] Techno question: where is this gremlin located?

Time to take the ashtray out and check all the wires under there to the 
tray and the lighter.  If something came apart, or the little protector 
boots came off the connectors, you could be making contact to wires via 
the shift linkage in the console.

Just a thought.
