Actually the volt meter told him the same thing he just ignored it!!

If it reads less than 14 volts or so your alt is not charging properly

>>>Probably would have recognized it INSTANTLY with an ammeter. While
it's mildly interesting to know how many volts your battery has at any given
moment, only an ammeter actually tells you anything you need to know, in real
time.

I was fortunate enough to be allowed to drive a Lamborghi Espada during the
Rocky Mountain tour this past weekend. We got stuck in heavy traffic and
I was forced to turn on the manual second radiator fan. While sitting
there with the fans both running, I could see a visible discharge on the
ammeter; I was able to bring the engine rpm up just a few hundred rpm until the
needle displaced slightly to the positive side, ensuring the battery never lost
charge. A voltmeter wouldn't have shown this power deficit and wouldn't
have enabled me to properly manage the situation.

In your case, you got extremely lucky and managed to make it home.
Imagine the grief if you had broken down on the side of the road, due to a
malfunction that may have actually occured six months ago?
