And yet, it does do a somewhat effective job compared to a straight pipe, 
even with an empty can.   It's certainly not as effective as a proper muffler 
though.   Putting a perforated Y-pipe in the muffler can and filling the 
rest of the can with noise absorbing material doesn't adversely impact flow 
but does markedly cut down on noise.
