Yes to cooler denser air....
I started used an airbox in '96 before I got the ir-efi thinking it wouldn't hurt and it might even help while I was running open track and open road races..I don't know if it works or not. Scott Black hooked me up with a couple aero and design people like Pete Brock years ago who to me they were convinced the 4" ears probably stop working effectively at speeds much greater then a 100 mph.
After Mike Trusty and Dick Drenske added the fuel injection I just left the intake ears on thinking if nothing else they loooked great. And I would have someone design and fabricate a air box (thanks Goran for the offer) fabricated for the fuel injection but then realized I didn't own a race car and I really didn't want to hide the polished intake or throttle bodies so I still don't know if a airbox does or does not work on a Pantera using side intake induction.
About a year ago at SilverState one of the Corvette guys asked me if I was going to add a airbox now that I had the fuel injection... and I said that I was......and he nodded his head and said, "yea good idea - you'll pick up more power".......
And as he is saying this I realize there is no way I am going to hide that intake and throttle bodies with a air box'. ;-)>

I intend to eventually install a system on my GT5 to draw air in through the
side windows/vents. My aim is to have a source of cooler denser air for the
engine. The current flow pattern has us extracting air from the engine bay
that is heated as it passes by the headers first.
I have listened to the debate for years about the 4" ear requirement on the
side of the car. The advocates say it is necessary for the ram air effect.
That may be so, however, I am not seeking to ram air into the carburetor.
We certainly are not benefiting from ram air in the stock configuration, so
I don't see why it is postulated as a requirement when ever someone inquires
about ingesting air from the side.
I am confident that if the intakes tract is extended to an opening in the
side gill/window even without an ear, the engine will suck in all the cooler
denser air that it needs despite the theoretical boundary layer. Lord
knows, it certainly rushes into my car when I roll down the driver's window
without the benefit of anything, like an intake stroke, creating a lower
vacuum.
