[DeTomaso] Mayonnaise on the dipstick

Dave,

You can rule out #1 as the Cleveland doesn't run water through the intake.
Unless you have a different engine that is...

Subject: [DeTomaso] Mayonnaise on the dipstick
Importance: High

Just checking over the Pantera yesterday before we set off on the big
Rocky Mountain Tour on Tuesday.
It's 200 miles since I changed out the stage 2 break-in oil.

I pulled out the dipstick - the level was good, but there was just a
tiny fleck of mayo at the end.
The optimist in me says - pcv valve fault - just collecting a bit of
condensate.

I checked the anti-freeze level, but it's hard to tell with the overflow
tank.
It's maybe down but no more than a pint and I'm not sure I had all the
air out anyway.
I started it up with the cap off - no bubbles and there's nothing white
in the exhaust,
so neither exhaust nor oil are getting into the coolant.

Onto the lift, let it settle for a half-hour and take a cup of oil out
of the pan.
Just turning a bit of a chocolate colour - oh shit!
I let that settle and got maybe a teaspoon of green in the bottom.
So it's clear, coolant is going into the anti-freeze and at a very slow
rate.

Off with a valve cover and there's no sign of mayo or cheese at all.
Check the headbolt torque and intake torque and they're both OK.

So I'm thinking
1. Intake gasket just not sealing of one of the cooling channels. The
intake is a Performer so it's dry.
I can get that off, get a gasket tomorrow morning and still make the
show.

2. Front cover / waterpump gaskets not sealing. No way I can make that.
I had to wait for the present gasket set to come in.

3. Buy a leakdown tester to check for a head gasket leak.
I'm not sure such a slow leak would show and that'll leave me
changing the head gasket anyway.

Damn - it's running so fine.
Anyway - can anyone correct my thinking here??
Any kind of magic would be fine.

tks
dave
