[DeTomaso] Decklid/Fender Problem

Album NameHowdy Folks,
I'm in the process of restoring my engine bay.  The decklid has apparently beat up the fenders like I have never seen on another car.  The car has been hit in the rear before.  The hinge bolts at the roof are tight,  but that doesn't mean they always were.  I'm looking at doing a couple of pins on but not thru the decklid.  What I'm concerned about is whether or not I am missing something here as to the cause of the chewed up fenders?  Has anyone seen one beat up this bad before?
