Well, I decided to unbolt the front calipers and hold them sideways while tapping with a mallet, causing any air in the outboard side to migrate inboard and then upward. Got significant air out on both sides. Also seemed to help to have the assistant push the pedal down quickly, as it seemed to entrain air that sat in pocket with slow fluid flow.

Got some more air out the rears with this "rapid" techinique also, so now the pedal feels good.
