FWIW my '86 Porsche 944 Turbo had metal supports taped to the rim behind the rubber valve stems to prevent them from defecting at high speed. Not sure how necessary it was but it looked kinda cool.

It was my understanding that the centrifugal force of a tire spinning at very high speeds would cause the valve stem to push inward and release air, especially on a stock Pantera Campagnola rim where the valve stem points directly to the center of the rim. This is why they came with metal caps that sealed the stem. That's also why they need to be metal stems. This is the one of those old Pantera factoids that make sense but who really knows!
