[DeTomaso] 427 SOHC in a Pantera?

There was a 427 SOHC put into a pre-L back in the '80s. From the photos,
its worse than swapping a 426 Hemi into the poor car- the SOHC heads are about
the widest ever built at 32" without headers and due to the amount of steel
in the aluminum heads, the complete engine still weighs around 700 lbs!
There used to be considerable trouble setting the SOHC up because the 7-ft-long
timing chain stretched more on the left head than the right, requiring
about 6 degrees more cam lead on one side. A decade ago Dove Mfg began offering
gear drives for the cams, fixing the cam-chain stretch problem.... for
$4000. Not to worry, though- these rare engines sell for $30,000 nowadays so an
extra 4 grand is trivial. Best guess is $50K before his Pantera moves under
SOHC power (not including the cost of the car). Good luck winning the lottery
to your acquaintence- J Deryke
