Seriously. Your car is a '74 GTS, which came from the factory NOT with a
proper GTS exhaust system, but rather a plain-Jane L-model girly-man
exhaust, with some fakey-doo oversize chrome tips attached. With time, the
mufflers rust out inside, and the resonators rust out. Chances are if you whack
the muffler cans with a rubber mallet you'll hear all sorts of crud rattling
around inside.
(This assumes you didn't replace the mufflers at some point in the past,
which I don't think you have--and you're the original owner).
It's pointless to try to salvage worn-out, girly-man stock mufflers. Since
your headers are totally non-stock (turbo conversion), you have some
serious exhaust work ahead of you anyway. You might as well just get new
mufflers--either factory GTS if you are into originality, or any number of
aftermarket mufflers which will provide far better performance than the GTS
mufflers.
The GTS mufflers are very classy looking, and relatively quiet compared to
wide-open things like Borla, Flowmaster etc. but they are also substantially
more expensive.
