[DeTomaso] Crankcase Evacuation System

As has been mentioned, a racing crankcase evacuation system makes use of
exhaust flow rather than carb vacuum, to draw air/fumes in from the crankcase
and blow them out the exhaust. This obviously inactivates all smog
attachments and only works at higher rpms. The vacuum pulled can be strong enough to
invert crankshaft seals front and back so at low engine speeds, you get no
suction and new oil leaks start.
It also picks up oil mist and can vastly increase oil useage unless an
air/oil separator with a return is added (not usually part of racing systems).
It can remove enough oil mist that ring, cylinder wall, cam and wristpin wear
increase quite a bit unless the engine is specifically designed for such a
system. It really doesn't increase engine power; racers like them mainly
'cause if an oil leak starts, an evacuation system will prevent oil from
hitting the track and getting them black-flagged. FWIW- J Deryke
