At the Tirerack.com site it shows the Pirelli PZero tire:
the 345/35-15 is 24.9" in diameter and 13.8" in section width while
the 335/35-17 is 26.2" in diameter and 13.4" in section

so the 17" tire is 1.3" larger in diameter-- 0.65" greater in radius.
Although it is 0.4" narrower in width (0.2" on each side), it will be more prone to hit the bodywork than the 15" tire.?

Regarding the front, there are no tires made in 285/40-15 according to tire rack, but by calculation that tire would theoretically be 23.98" in diameter and 11.2" in width.

As an example, the 245/40-17 Goodyear Eagle F1 is 24.7" in diameter and 9.7" section width.? But I believe people run those on the front of narrow-bodied cars, so it should fit fine.

To admit my ignorance, what size tire did the factory GT4 run on the rear?

I gather it ran 285/40-15 on the front.

This will tell us what OD the new, 17" tires should have. (Assuming the goal is to reproduce a factory look.)

The road cars used the same size tires as the GT5, because that is all that was available.? 285/40-15 front and 345/35-15 rear.

The race cars used considerably taller tires in the rear (along with one-inch wider wheels, 15x14); the front tires were a bit taller too.? Patrick Hals can tell us what sizes he's running now; he has played around with tire sizes a bit during his ownership of his two Gr4 race cars.
