 That's true.  10" is 254mm, and usually you run a tire a bit wider than the rim,not narrower.  It could be done,
but it might make more sense to get a 9" width if you want to run a 245 tire.

I'd be surprised if Will even means 245/40/17, that is a verry narrow tire for a 
10" rim, most are runing 275/40/17's on that width rim on a widebody car.
