Chris,
I cannot understand the solution they chose over a vented cap.  Imagine with a full tank, under acceleration in first gear, fuel sprays out of the little tube.  Possibly the air stream carries the leaking gasoline to the outside of the car.
In trying to find a leak in my ZF I sprayed the back of it with BrakeKleen and then blew talcum powder all over it. It stuck on and i drove the car up to about 50 MPH.

Later i was amazed to find talcum impinged on the motormounts, a couple of feet forward of the back of the ZF.  If that had been gasoline spray it would have hit the exhaust pipes and exploded and probably gone right up that little tube into the tank.
