I too had a real challenge finding the 'right' key blank. I bought quite a
few that didn't ~quite work. I wasted lots of time running around, and money on
not-quite right blanks.
I also wasted money via ebay on what is 'advertised' to be correct. The sellers are
still selling them with the misleading description.
Some of the wrong ones are even marked with what appears to be the CORRECT key code!
When I found the correct one I bought a LOT, to pass on to others.
I've sold most of them by now. Many people don't seem to have trouble finding the right
one, but when you do it can be quite frustrating.
I guess it is like those cam blanks that had the poorly cast gear, some times you get the
bad one, and sometimes it works out OK.
Anyway there is one correct for the pre-1980-ish cars and different one for post
1980-ish cars, and they look almost identical, except the grove is a little farther over.
(We are talking door/trunk keys, not ignition.)

Yes, I recently discovered this too. Although there is a nominal
specification for the key blank, in fact the groove in the blank varies dramatically
in position from one brand to the next, which is very odd. When getting
keys made for Darrell Mountjoy's Pantera, I had to go to a locksmith who had
key blanks of several different brands, and it took much trial and error to
come up with two that worked.
