IMHO, not really. Extra lube will soak up power from fliud shear but if the 
pressure-relief tube is open and stuff isn't drooling out, a little too 
much lube is a whole lot better than too little. Much of the innards are 
splash-lubed. Remember also, it took me 300 miles of fast highway driving to get 
our ZF up to 180F degrees, where there will be some thermal expansion that 
drives excess lube out. I'm assuming that 180F is 'normal' for less than SS 
speeds. 
Remember also that 3-1/2 qts is for a bone-dry ZF, which cannot happen 
unless someone's split the trans from the diff case, and removed the end cap. 
Lube just doesn't fully drain out otherwise. So I'd bet that most careful 
owners add   a little too much lube based on reading the manual numbers. Good
