Dick,
 
The illustration has the side of the trans removed so I can't tell where
the plug is in relation to the drive axles. Looking at this pic from
Panteraplace 
http://www.panteraplace.com/Tech%20Info/ZF%2015.jpg I see that the level
plug on the right is positioned just a little below the retaining screw
for the secondary shaft (black hex head) which is at centerline height
of the transmission secondary shaft and the differential. This indicates
that the stationary oil level is below the centerline of the drive axles
but it will cover the lower part of the seal.

Tomas,
That is very interesting. 
I thought that the M-1 had a ZF.  Not having the illustration, Can you
see how much of the drive axles are covered?
