Dick,

The Pantera is supposed to have 3.5 liters. If you look in the -2 manual on page 3 there's a cut away side view of the trans in Pantera orientation. As you say there's a bit of difference in capacity due to the "sump" part but I doubt that you'll be able to cover the lowest, the input, shaft well enough in Mangusta orientation with just 2 liters. That's just my speculation though. Due to the wonderful Internet I hereby present you with a picture of a -2 mounted Mangusta style in a BMW M1:

Note the fill/overflow plug on the right hand side of the black cover. It looks like the plug is unpainted iron. Using the cover nuts for reference you should be able to estimate what ZF considered to be a reasonable height of the oil level on a trans without the plug. You can also see what appears to be either the cover of an oil pump or perhaps just a cover of a drive for such a pump.
