It should be quite simple to move the lever until the fingers of the clutch 
arm touch the fingers of the clutch, at which point it then becomes 
impossible.

The amount of movement to take up the free play is quite small--perhaps 
1/8th or 1/16th of an inch?

DOT3 or DOT3/4 is what you want.
