hehehe... well... not exactly, but we're getting there.
Filled the system via the thermostat opening. Installed a thermostat
(gasp) and bolted the pipe back down, hooked it up to the swirl tank,
tightened connections, fill the tank half full and started it up.
Monitored temps. When the thermostat got to about 196, it opened and
mount St. Helens went off with great green globs of coolant everywhere
steaming up the entire compartment. Glad I backed the car outside.
Kept monitoring the temp and the housing began cycling from over 196 to
under, to over to under. So while it was doing that, I checked the
swirl tank and added coolant to bring it to about half way. Kept
running and monitoring. Soon, the radiator fans came on, meaning fluid
was circulating, the thermal switch in the radiator works and the
electronics work to run the fans. Temps came down and the fans shut off.
I continued checking the swirl tank and keep it about half full as the
car idled and cycled. I had one or two more coolant eruptions but I
just washed down the driveway and added more coolant until I didn't get
any eruptions and the whole thing seemed stable for 15 minutes or so. I
capped it and shut it down.
At this point I noted the dash gauge was not working. Huh? Well, I
need to let things cool down so I went in for some dinner.
Later, I came back and unhooked the wire to the sending unit and
grounded it, pegged the gauge. Damn, must have picked up the wrong
sending unit from the toolbox. Grabbed the other one, held my breath
and changed the senders. This of course, introduced more air into the
block.... again. So, repeat the above a second time, complete with
fluid eruptions.
While idling, I felt it was a good time to check the clutch so I climbed
in and got nothing. I also noticed my brakes went to the floor.
<sigh> The brakes I can probably do fine, but the clutch adjustment
still has me worried.
When I left the car a little while ago, it had been running for some
time without boil over and the radiator cap off. I capped it and shut
it down. No gurgling or other strange noises. So I'm cooling down for
a while and then will re-bleed the brakes and try to check the clutch.
