I have mine hooked up directly. i.e., you turn on the key, a relay
clicks and you are flowing water at its maximum rate (my pump is
55gpm). It was easiest, straightforward and sometimes I get lazy. You
have to listen closely to be able to hear it with the engine off, so
it's not like it's too noisy or anything...

If you want, you can do like Mike Trusty and others have done by
putting a PWM (pulse width modulator) on it and controlling the flow
based on the temperature.

Up to you on how high tech you go.

The other nice thing is... I have a flat engine cover! No water pump
sticking out!
