[DeTomaso] MythBusters

If you haven't watched "The Worlds Fastest Indian", it's great story about a decades long project with a good ending.  I think he was casting his own pistons, shaving the tread off ancient street tires to make racing tires, etc.  Pretty cool.

And I am really impressed with the guys who build a car from
'scratch'. Just like your 'iron ore' comment, Bill.

The gt40s.com forum is full of guys like that. One guy is building his
own transaxle and casting the housing himself! He has hand carved the
mold! Now THAT is 'scratch built'.

Gotta' love the inspiration, the motivation, the dedication and the
overall willingness to persevere on a 'build your own car project'
with the depth and length some of those projects have. The excitement
of having tracked down THAT special part after two years of looking...
or finding a 'really good deal' on something that was going to cost
'too much'.

Of course, there is always the discussion on how much a given project
impacts the 'better half' and the bank account, but hey... Talking and
talking and talking about something is one thing, solving the problem
and doing it is a whole 'nuther ball game. I have to laugh when I hear
people say... 'man, wouldn't it be cool to 'drop a -insert your
favorite engine here- into that?' Yeah, right... Do you realize how
much work that will be? Blank stares.... OK, I'm sure it'd be cool
though...
:-)

The other thing that I've noted is that some times with these project
cars, the trip is more important than the arrival. The day comes when
the car is ready and goes for its first test drive... you can almost
feel a sort of disappointment. It's over... my project is done... now
what? All I get to do is drive it...
:-)

Oh!!! How about another project!?? Yeah!!!! How about a 1972 Deauville!

Just kidding.... It's Friday and a three day weekend ahead. Time to
call Quella and harass him some more about my car. At least I have
another one to play with....

FWIW,
Kirby
