FWIW,

OEM Pantera starter motors have a field windings which create the magnetic
field in which the armature turns. Modern, hi torque, gear reduction
starter motors use permanent magnets to create the magnetic field for the
armature. This difference is what makes the modern motors so much smaller and
lighter.

The OEM motors can not act as a generator once the 12V to the motor is
interrupted when the starter solenoid drops out.

A permanent magnet motor will act as a generator if the starter gear is
engaged with the engine and the engine is running. The power to the small
terminal on the new starter motors must be interrupted when the ignition key
is released from the START position or the generator action of the starter
motor can keep the starter engaged with the flywheel.

The flywheel will drive the starter motor armature at approximately 16X
the crankshaft RPM. If the armature power input to the starter motor is
connected to solenoid input to the starter motor the starter will try to
override the Bendix mechanism and your starter will have shorted, miserable life.
