[DeTomaso] hot start problem solved

To all of those interested in the "hot start" issue. When I ordered my
starter I did specify to DB that I was trying to resolve a hot start problem
and they did include the "kit" which consists of around 40" of 14 gauge wire
with a ring fitting on one end and a female blade on the other. They did
supply directions that called for removing the wire that runs from the
switched side of the fire wall mounted solenoid and moving it over to the
"Hot side "" so the lead running to the starter is now coming directly from
the hot lead from the battery going to the fire wall mounted firewall. This
gives you a lead to the starter that is always "Hot". The new wire they
supply as the installation kit goes from the switched side of the firewall
mounted solenoid to the smaller trigger pole on the starter mounted
solenoid. The reason I didn't modify my wiring when I first installed the
new starter was because several people told me it was not necessary. When it
didn't resolve my problem DB sent me a new starter and insisted it was
necessary to follow their directions and wire the starter as outlined in
their directions. I added the additional ground as an added measure. I can't
say for sure how much of a part the extra ground plays or how much of my
results are from the revised wiring. As far as Asa's statement that it is
basically the same I can only say on my car the difference is remarkable.
The first starter I installed I wired like Asa has his wired. I used the
firewall solenoid as outlined in the original Pantera schematics and I used
a small loop of wire to jump from the small pole on the starter mounted
solenoid to the larger pole with the 12 volt lead coming from the switched
side of the fire wall mounted solenoid. With this set up there was virtually
no difference in the performance of my starter. It worked cold and dragged
when hot ( it would barely start the car). With the second starter installed
according to DB instructions the starter has substantially increased rpm
while both hot and cold. The starter spins so fast that the car starts
instantly even when the temp gauge shows 180 degrees. It is my feeling that
although the added ground strap certainly isn't hurting it is not the reason
for the dramatic increase in starting rpm and torque. I have been screwing
around with this problem for almost a year. I have changed my ignition
switch, my ignition block, my battery (an optima gel cell with 700 +
cranking amps) and changed the battery terminals and cables.
The quality and performance of the DB starter are outstanding and their
customer service is exemplary.
