Ken,

A regular OEM light housing should have studs that are long enough.  I  
suspect you have housings with shorter than normal studs, perhaps a  
previous alteration?

The McMaster part you linked looks like it would serve as a coupler.

Not sure what you meant by '"drill the hole out"

All the numerous GRP4 housings, and the few regular housings I have  
dealt with have all used brass or aluminum 4mm threaded inserts in the  
plastic housings; not sheet metal screws.
