Soaking the lower shaft in penetrating oil will normally do nothing. Inside
the upright is a hardened tube that rusts to the long shaft you're trying
to press out. Penetrating oil never reaches the problem area.
As you say, cut with your Sawzall (or a hand hacksaw) very carefully right
next to the a-arm boss. You will be cutting thru the sheet-steel cap, one of
the thrust washers, the sealing o-ring and the long steel shaft. And you'll
likely have to cut again on the other end, in exactly the same place, to
get the a-arm off the upright. Done carefully, the upright and the a-arm
bosses will be unharmed.
Starting in the late '70s and thru the '80s, this happened so often- from
lack of grease which must be hand-applied unless the system is modified- that
most vendors sell a kit to replace the parts destroyed by the Sawzall work.
Remember, if you error, try to error in the direction of the a-arm boss;
its only mild steel and can be easily gas-welded and trued up again with a
file. But if you inadvertently cut part of the upright away, a proper repair
will be costly.
Good luck- J Deryke
