[DeTomaso] Pantera - metal shelving shelves info

I just bought several metal shelving units with "Particle board" shelves at Lowe's.
          If I am going to put these in my barn/garage, which is not insulated, heated, a/c, etc.; with lots of humididy (Houston) - are the particle boards going to come apart?  Is there any way to "seal" them?
          I assembled one of the units, and started thinking, "Hmm, is this a good idea!"  I had thought of making my own shelves out of 2X4's and plywood - but these at Lowe's were almost 1/2 price.  Maybe I should take them back?
