[DeTomaso] Bleeders on the heads... need advice before I cry

Do it when the engine is really hot.  The steam will blow the metal shavings all over your body - but not in the engine.

No really - the standard answer is to pack the drill bit with grease - and go slow.  Most of the shavings come out (and not in) anyway.
