[DeTomaso] need advice before I cry

 Is there coolant in your oil?  The oil would look  brownish.
If not AFAIK you're not going to damage anything if you check or replace the thermostat and run the engine again.
But if ANY of the sensors start to read high (>220 F) again I would shut it down right away.

There must be a way to fill the cooling system effectively.  I can't imagine the factory (or dealers) spent 8 hrs on each car just doing that.

reassuring to hear that.  hopefully will be same happy story for me.  i plan to 
remove thermostat first to see what is up.  hard to believe it just wouldn't 
open.  maybe there will be some debris blocking it, such as maybe an old sock 
that fell in while I wasn't looking, or that $60,000 I lost while putting the 
car together...  Who knows, maybe I'll find what is left of my youth, although 
that would be too small to block anything.
