[DeTomaso] Fw: Electrical Gremlins Revisited

And the winner is Julian! At least with the simplest solution in my case. I just swapped the electrical portion of the switches, (which didn't even require removing the columns), and voila! I am back in business, for the time being anyway. I hope this thing doesn't crap out on me in the middle of the desert while heading to Reno. :-)))

Thank you all for your help,
Art

  Art,

If your problem is in the switch it sounds like it would be in the electrical part not the tumbler. The electrical portion is held on the back of the ignition switch with two regular screws. So should be an easy swap.

I pulled all the guts out of mine and cleaned t all up and it's worked fine since.

In trying to remove the switch from my totaled car, (to be used on the new car), I see it is not so simple. I seem to remember some drilling must be done to the rivet, or whatever it is, that is holding the switch together on the column? Before I start drilling away, I'd like to make sure that is the proper way to remove the switch? The idiosyncrasy of the old switch was that the key could be difficult to remove on occasion, but other than that, it worked fine. I could just swap the columns in the two cars, but then I'll have to swap the turn signal switch since the one in the totaled car was damaged. Also, can these switches be repaired?
