[DeTomaso] first post, pretty good question. Alumium Flywheel for the street?

Should not present a problem. On stock Panteras, drivetrain inertia comes
from a 30-lb cast iron flywheel and a 16-lb clutch, a 6-lb cast iron crank
pulley and its 10-1/2 lb harmonic balancer, plus a 5-lb iron waterpump pulley.
By trial & error, we've found that the flywheel can be changed to a 15-lb
aluminum one, the crank pulley can be changed to a 3-lb aluminum one and the
waterpump pulley changed to a 2 lb aluminum unit, all without compromising
street performance one bit. Inertia goes down and power goes up, plus alloy
flywheels are far safer from explosions from a missed shift or other
over-revving problems.
Your 302-in-a Mangusta has a few lighter bits than a 351-in-a-Pantera, but
it also has the jackshaft and two extra pulleys & belts, all of which add
inertia to the system. You should have no problem changing the stock flywheel
for an aluminum unit and add power while not sacrificing driveability. Try
it- you'll like it. Cheers- J Deryke
