In my opinion, yes and yes. A hot engine is inherently harder to start, and 
the heat also reduces the cranking power of a starter. HIgher compression 
closed-chamber '71s are usually worse in this regard. So if things are 
marginal, you will have these problems with a stock starter. Do you have the extra 
ground strap to the engine as well as the stock one to the ZF? Sometimes 
adding a second ground strap and cleaning both the frame and engine/ZF 
connections with a wire brush helps a little. Good luck- J Deryke
