[DeTomaso] Jacking the engine ...

I don't remember seeing a reply to this, so I apologize if this is a repeat.

Yes, you can jack the engine. I've done it many times. I usually put a
small sheet of plywood on the floor jack and then lift the engine directly
by the oil pan. The plywood distributes the force evenly across the oil
plan. It prevents the jack from scratching and denting the pan.

Now that I think of it, I've only done it with the normal front-sump oil
pans. I imagine it would work equally as well with a Pantera style pan. At
any rate, the oil pan is strong enough to support the weight of the engine.
Just make sure you use a sheet of plywood.

I've also done this with a bunch of cardboard - about an inch. I prefer
plywood, though.

If the engine stops going up while you are jacking, stop jacking. It's
binding somewhere. If you keep jacking, it will dent the pan - plus it
might break whatever is binding. Besides, you only need to lift it about
1/2".

One more thing - it's easier to bolt the mounts to the engine first. It's
too hard to get the bolts into the block when the mounts are secured to the
frame. Once the mounts are in the block, it's relatively easy to nudge the
mounts to get the 3 vertical bolts installed.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Jacking the engine ...

Gents,

I dropped my powerplant back in and, unfortunately, the passenger-side rear
motor mount is not lined up properly. The mount needs to slide over 1/8" in
order for the bolt to take to the threads in the block.

Since I don't have the engine hoist available, I was thinking that I should
jack the block up an inch or so to release pressure from the mount. My
question is, can I jack the engine from the flat section of the oil pan
(nearest the bellhousing)? I would use some wood to protect the pan.

Please advise your advice, friends.

Thanks,
Erik
