Voltage, which can be seen from the schematics as it has only one wire 
from the coil to the tacho.

A current triggered tacho is connected between the coil and 
distributor/ignition. I have only seen some old British made Smith's 
tachos that were current triggered, and the trigger wire was inductively 
coupled to the tacho. It was just a loop of wire around a screw on the 
back of the tacho, with no electrical connection.
