#!- what is the rewired electric choke hooked to? If he took a hot wire from 
the coil, this acts like a rev-limiter and if the hookup is not secure, it 
shorts the coil to ground intermittently.
#2- assuming the wiring is off somewhere else and NOT the coil and is secure, 
the loading up and running rich might be a jetting problem, or it might be a 
blown power valve from the previous backfires. Incidently, backfiring often 
comes from trying to apply too much power to a cold engine too soon with no 
choke.... In any case, diagnosing carb problems from 3000 miles away is difficult. 
The shotgun approach: take the whole car to a shop that sorts out carb 
problems. I suggest Pantera owner Pat Mical in MA (Future Auto). Good luck- J Deryke
