So I guess it's all downhill from now on regarding the humble origins of our ZF's. Michael in Savannah

Subject: [DeTomaso] Fendt roller revealed!

Hi guys,

Finally, some light to go along with the heat!

Roland Jackel sent me an actual, for-real photo of a Fendt Roller:

See, it's made by Fendt, and it has a roller on the back. :>)

I saw your discussion in the webring about the Fendt. It was not a road
paving machine. It was a roller to repair ski runs. See attached picture.  They
needed the five speed to climb the hills. This roller was manufactured in the
seventies. The ZF boxes were cheap in that times, so they used that box as many
others. The ZF 5 speed was constructed out of a 4 speed ZF box, that was
mounted in a Hanomag light truck. Later also in a Mercedes light truck. Both trucks
had front wheel drive and a very low loading box. I still have a few of these
boxes. I can get some spares out of them to repair the five speeds.

So there you go. Thanks Roland!
