Dear Art,
I second the recommendation to save your stock steel hood
and pursue your hood vent experiments and modifications on an expendable
fiberglass hood. FWIW.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Subject: [DeTomaso] Possible Hood Vents
You have been invited to view Art's photos! I am considering cutting
holes in my original hood. I recently did a cooling system test on my car
with the hood latched in place then again with the hood up. After getting
the engine good and hot by driving, I pulled it into my backyard and let it
idle until it wouldn't get any hotter. After 30-45 minutes, the temp
reached almost 230 degrees where it leveled off. I then opened the hood and
watched the temp go down. After another 30-45 minutes of idling, the temp
dropped almost 30 degrees. The air temp was about 78 degrees. I know there
are guys out there that have adequate cooling systems without opening the
hood but this just seems too easy! The link below includes pictures of my
proposed hood modification. I painted the area in black that I am
considering cutting out. The black area pretty much maximizes the useful
area that can be cut out for my lay down radiator without cutting into the
frame of the hood. Initially I just want to leave an open hole to maximize
the cooling effect. If I am not satisfied with the appearance, I can
always make up a screen or grill to change the appearance. I realize that
with the large opening, I will be able to clearly see the headlight bar
running across the underside of the hood. I plan to paint most everything
in view under the hood, flat black. I also figure I'll wind up painting the
hood a matte black. I am hoping this modification will also reduce front
end lift. Aerodynamics of the car will be important as I plan to run the
car at very high speeds in the Silver State. I don't want to screw up the
aero by cutting these holes. Some have suggested buying a fiberglass hood
to do the modification instead of cutting up an original. Any idea what
original and fiberglass hoods are worth? What do you guys think?
