Oh, btw Charlie, your suggestion about shimming the steering rack may in 
fact be a good advice. I took it for a drive this afternoon, and I now 
notice a distinct play in the steering wheel with the wheels pointing 
straight.
***Begs the question - has something worn, or was it assembled that way? In
my case, it would appear to have been assembled that way and perhaps had a
loose steering rack from day 1? Unless someone snuck in and added shims in
the middle of the night. 

Tomas thought that the assembly must have "settled" or something - there was
some kind of gunk that wore away with time leaving the slop. It's otherwise
inconceivable that they would have mounted a brand new steering rack with
slack in the system...
