Hot no, turbulent probably and dirty not so much. I've been doing it for years and the air cleaner shows no more garbage than I find around the carb base on top of the intake. If you look at your deck lid after driving down a gravel road you'll see that the air around the deck lid opening is far from clean anyway. I took air temp readings in the duct and they were only a few degrees above ambient when the car was moving.
