[DeTomaso] (NPC)LoJack

Gents,

GPS-based asset tracking is an industry I have worked in for 12 years.

My personal take on theft prevention and recovery solutions is that you
need a satellite-based system that is 'always on' with a low level of
network latency. Iridium is the best network for such a solution (used
by the US military).

Low-end consumer solutions are still not ready for prime time, IMO.
There are way too many weak links and reliability issues for such
systems, especially those that rely on private RF networks for
communicating the whereabouts of your stolen vehicle.

Now, it should be noted that even the most robust systems can still fail
as they all rely on a dedicated power source (battery back-up is
useless) and antennas that need to see the sky. If someone wants to
steal your supercar, chances are likely that they will be too dumb to
pull it off (and get caught immediately) or smart enough to cover all
the bases.

All things considered, I was offered a 15% discount on my Pantera's
insurance because I installed the system that my company sells. Not bad
...

The problem as I see it is that this unit prevents hot wire starts. If
you
are trying to prevent the theft of a collector car you have to realize
that
there is a strong probability that the thief won't be driving it away.
They
will flatbed it or worse use an enclosed trailer. In these events this
type
of device is useless. Some of the best devices on the market don't even
wait for you to report the car missing. They use a combination gps and
cell
phone and contact you if your car has been moved from where ever it is
supposed to be. Using the cell phone and gps you can track the vehicle
to
its current position even if it it's moving. Wired into the vehicles
electrical system it will always have a charged battery to call out or
accept you inquiry location request..
