[DeTomaso] The End of the Affair...

Indeed a good read.

I attend many car themed events, racing, concours, club shows, track days,
etc.

The coolest cars seemed to always be owned by the guy who seems least likely
to use them to their potential,
whether that's accumulated wisdom or cowardice I have no idea, having
realized that I'm becoming one of those guys day by day,
I shall defer to accumulated wisdom.

The older guys have no respect ( in general ) for the younger guys because
the machines are so different, as if the clothes, language, earrings, music
and
do dad add-ons weren't divisive enough.

I bypassed a car show last Saturday for two reasons, it was close to my
house and I took an advance look in my Magnum at the crowd to see if it was
worth getting the Pantera wet
( and cleaning it up again ) as it was raining off and on and projected to
do the same all day long. Seeing that it was a handful of "Tuner" cars and
the tattooed, rap listening, earring wearing crowd, pants dragging, foul
mouthed crowd. I decided to go back home, Que up the Turkish Grand Prix
Qualifying that I had set to be recorded earlier and watch it instead.

It rained as predicted and I felt OK about not taking the car out.

OR did I?

I am still thinking about it aren't I?

Was it really cleaning the car up, was it hanging out for hours with kids
half my age, was it snobbery knowing that my Pantera was
faster, better, cooler, etc.

or perhaps was it the company in general, what do I possibly have in common
with those guys aside from my love of cars and driving them, isn't that
enough?

The answer that I have reconciled myself with is NO, that is not enough and
perhaps that's the same with many of you.
Why we have a Pantera forum and not a general Car guy forum, we all have
something in common the Pantera itself. I suggest that because of what we
absolutely
have in common, that by definition we have other things in common, the
average age here must be at least 50, the household income is probably above
average,
chances are most of you have kids, and are married ( or have been ), your
careers have been decided or are at the tail end and winding down.

I'd bet very few of us care about the stereo in the Pantera that much, it's
there, it might be nice, it might have nicer speakers, but it sure as hell
isn't what made you buy the car.

You don't have neon running lights, a DVD player in the dash or an aquarium
in the headrest.

I have become the old man to some degree, those kids just don't get
it,....same thing the old guys said about me 30 years ago.
I wanted to go fast and they wanted to polish chrome and brass, now I still
want to go fast and the new kids want a Wii system and a DVD player
on wheels for a mobile entertainment center.

I have an entertainment center, it's called a house......

It will always be about common values and spending time with like minded
people, it all comes down to having those other things in common
that draw us together.

We have the Pantera and all that
implies.........................................
