[DeTomaso] NPC air speed. indicators

What's harder to explain, fron an engineering point of view, is why
piston-engine aircraft (which don't cost nearly what an Airbus costs, but
aren't exactly cheap) continue to use 40 year old technology.

(stepping waaaay out of my area of expertise, so please correct me where I'm
wrong). I understand that modern, brand-spanking new piston engined aircraft
continue to use points, for example, as electronic ignition has not been
certified for use.

There are numerous examples of totally obsolete technology. The reason is
basically that the cost of certifying an MSD 6-AL for your Beechcraft is
prohibitively expensive. You need a zillion hours of bench time, flight
time, and who knows what other kind of time in order to have it certified by
the FAA. The volume simply isn't enough to justify the enormous expense to
have it certified. If it isn't certified, you can't install it. So planes
continue to be designed and manufactured using nothing but the best from the
1960's.

i'm not a pilot but I think I know the asnwer... a gps gives you
groundspeed. a plane isn't kept aloft by the ground - its airflow. In
a 100 mph headwind a small plane could have groundspeed of zero and
stay aloft.

what's important is the airflow around the wings/plane, not how much
ground you are covering.

Or so it seems to me..
