[DeTomaso] One Pantera not making it to Reno - an idea

If it's that far off on the exposed bolt, I'd definitely try retorquing.

If it still seeps after retorquing, then I'd replace the head gasket
(resurface the head/etc.)

Either way, you still get to drink a beer afterwards.

Thanks to all who have responded. I'm over my mad now and ready to try
putting this cranky Eye-talian hybrid bitch back in her place . . . . .

I pulled the plugs on the back four cylinders, two each side, and they all
look good. Since the seepage of coolant seems to be coming from the back
and upper rear corner of the right side head, I am going to start by pulling
the valve cover and checking the torque on the head. My builder said it
should be to 105 ft/lbs. I tried the one exposed bolt at the back of the
head and got over a quarter-turn to only 95 lbs: 105 would be even more and
if the rest require similar tightening, perhaps I'll nip the seepage. Since
the plugs look good at this point, does anyone out there see a problem with
my plan? 'Course I'll pull the left valve cover and do the same to those
head bolts as well.

Or . . . . is this like a water pump where once the coolant starts leaking,
it's created a path and you need to change the gasket.

Thanks all!
Mike -ain't giving up that easy- Thomas

My builder said I shouldn't have had to worry about retourqueing the heads.
I'd need to have the face of the head check for true and surfaced, and there
are no machine shops open on Saturday that I can find.

I'll be there, but no in the Pantera.

This is a fairly new motor with only about 1500-2000 miles on it. I'm
assuming I have a bad head gasket, and there is no way I can get this fixed

point.

>>>Nonsense. You're well-located and have friends with knowledge nearby.
Go to the auto parts store and buy a set of head gaskets and intake gaskets
tomorrow; you and your PNW buddies can pull the intake, R&R the head and get
it all back together in just a few hours. If the problem is simply a blown
head gasket, it's really relatively minor.

You say it's a new motor. Did you re-torque the heads after the first
hundred miles or so? If not, you know how this failure happened. :<(
