Jack great info...I assumed that my block had not been modified with the oil restrictors
but obviously should check to make sure. The story about the bad cores is very
interesting...I'm surprised that no one figured out who made the bad ones.

Not on their quality- which is pretty good, but keep in mind that you should not run a hydraulic lifter cam AND a set of the common oil restrictors that limit oil flow to the cam and rockers. After 35 years, many blocks have been converted- even cores found at rebuilders. At low engine speeds, restrictors starve hydraulic lifter innards and they will rattle. If the noise doesn't bother you and you keep the revs up, the combo will be OK on the street. Otherwise. remove them. And the rattling will convince non-knowlegable onlookers that you have a radical solid lifter cam in there- good for bragging rights at the donut shoppe.

Second thing: after 10-20 miles of use on ANY aftermarket camshaft, pull the distributor and check the gear teeth. There were a rash of cams made with the integral gear teeth cut at the wrong pressure-angle. One such cam wore a distributor gear to razor-sharp teeth in 5 miles! There are only two or three cam-blank mfrgs in the U.S, and all grinders buy blank cams from them to make their products. The number of 351-C cams sold is pretty small so purging bad stock is slow- the gear angle cannot be seen by eye- it has to be measured. A warranty-replacement cam won't pay for the total rebuild your engine will need from pumping gear-tooth pieces thru the bearings and scratching the cylinder walls. FWIW- J Deryke
