The tubes aren't plated. The surface you see is polished stainless with 
some sort of transpatent coating like hard wax or Krylon spray. If you weld on 
stainless without a TIG and/or with other than stainless rod, the nickel in 
the stainless burns away and you're left with mild steel at the weld- which
