A new company is now building small 15-ton nuclear reactors, roughly the
size of a big hot-tub, to power rural communities, islands and other places
who want to be off the grid, or were never on it. Right now, they cost $25
million each, run totally automatic (the company envisions burying them 10 ft
or so in the ground) for 5 yrs before needing 'service', and each provides
around 25 megawatts of power- enough for around 20,000 U.S homes. The fuel has
absolutely no weapons potential and the unit cannot melt down. There is no
waste radiation and spent fuel-waste is the size of a football & can be
easliy re-processed. The company claims to have 100 firm orders and is not
associated with the U.S government, so the idea might actually work. But I can't
figure any way of getting one in anything smaller than an 18-wheeler....
maybe the nuclear-electric sports car will be in my lifetime?

Google's conspiracy theorists are polishing their arguments; the best one
says this is disruptive technology.... exactly what buggy-whip manufacturers
said about gasoline as a motor fuel.

The announcement about 6 months ago got zero play from most of the media
who were busy 'making' news instead of reporting it, except for Fox News.
