Agreed with Mike's diagnosis. I had  a similar problem and managed to carefully pull apart the ignition electrical switch connector. Internally it's a punched copper ring with a ball bearing and spring affair that gets worn and gummed up over the years. I cleaned up the ring and contacts, regreased it all and it's been fine since.....of course now I said that it's going to fall apart next week ;>)
