[DeTomaso] Radiator drain and new hoses

Hi Clay.
I recently drained my rad and lines. My Ron Davis alum rad didn't
appear to have any drain plugs so I decided to pull the hoses on the
engine end (the ones that join the coolant tubes to the engine/pump
tubes). I had fairly new green-stripes installed and, due to them only
being 4-inches or so in length, I had to cut them to get them off. The
resulting downpour of coolant took about 30 minutes to drain completely
and ended up being about 16 litres (4 gallons, I believe) in volume.
There was another 2 litres of coolant that poured out of the engine when
I pulled it. I didn't start my engine at all.
With both tubes exposed, I presume you could shove a garden hose in one
of them to flush the system - although you would need a lot of pressure
to cycle the water completely through your rad. You may just have to
alternate the hose between each tube.
Keep me posted on your install of new hoses. I am dreading that
exercise!
Cheers,
EA #3528

Subject: [DeTomaso] Radiator drain and new hoses
Is there any best way to drain the radiator to get out all of the debris
without a flush system?
I am changing out my temp sensor and am planning to drain/replace the
antifreeze.
I have the heater shut off and there is zero coolant in the heater hoses
as I drained it last winter when I redid the heater box. Is running the
car for a few minutes and then draining best or does it even matter?
Also, how hard is it to install the Gates Blue stripe hose? I was told
it is better and lasts a lifetime but is very stiff.
Thanks
Clay
